The primary research focus of our lab is developing of sustainable, environmental friendly and economical management practices for woody ornamental industry in Tennessee concentrating on plant pathology, mycology, plant disease diagnosis, plant disease management, integrated pest management and biological control of plant diseases and biopesticides research areas.

Dr. Farhat Avin started his job as a Plant Health Diagnostic Lab Scientist at Bayer Crop Science, Chesterfield, MO.

October 2024

Dr. Kumuditha Liyanage joined as a Grants Technical Reporting Manager at College of Agriculture of Tennessee State University, Nashville, TN.

Baysal-Gurel lab organized a Vascular Streak Dieback (VSD) Meeting on October 1 -2, 2024 in Otis L. Floyd Nursery Research Center, McMinnville, TN.

Dr. Fulya Baysal-Gurel attended the 2024 National Plant Diagnostics Network (NPDN) National Meeting in Portland, Maine from September 9 to 13, 2024.

Post doctoral Research Associate Dr. Kumuditha Liyanage participated in the 56th Southern Agriculture Economics Association (SAEA) held in Atlanta, Georgia from February 3 to 6, 2024 and he won the second place in the poster competition.

Dr. Bhawana Ghimire joined as a Plant Disease and Insect Diagnostician at Bartlett Tree Experts company in North Carolina.

Dr. Madhav Parajuli joined as a Post Doctoral Research Fellow at USDA-ARS, Nursery Research Center in McMinnville.

November 2023

Christina Jennings won the first place and Bhawana Ghimire won the second Place in the Agriculture-Plant Sciences oral session competition at the 133rd Tennessee Academy of Sciences (TAS) held in Rhodes College, Memphis, TN on November 18, 2023. Also, Christina Jennings won the first place in Agriculture poster session competition at TAS meeting. Congratulations to winners!

Madhav Parajuli presented oral and poster presentations at Ambrosia Beetle symposium in Entomological Society of America Meeting 2023 in National Harbor, Maryland which was held from November 5 to 8, 2023

Congratulations to Bhawana Ghimire, who successfully passed her Doctoral Dissertation Defense. Bhawana’s dissertation was entitled, “Improving Woody Ornamental Crop Disease Mitigation through Innovation”. 

Madhav Parajuli presented his research on "Ambrosia Beetle Prefers Flood Intolerant Field Nursery Tree Species for Attack and Colonization Under Flooding Conditions" in Tennessee Entomological Society 50th Annual Conference at Nursery Research Center which was held from October 9 to 10, 2023

Madhav Parajuli won the student travel award and Bayer complimentary registration fee sponsorship for the APS Meeting. 

Dr. Farhat Avin received the Travel award for the APS Agricultural Microbiomes Thinkathon and participated in the Pre-Meeting workshop.

Dr. Prabha Liyanapathiranage won the award in the “Nature” category for the Art in Phytopathology contest in Plant Health 2023 for her photo "Leopard print is making a splash this season"


Bhawana Ghimire and Christina Jennings participated in the American Society of Plant Biologists Conference in Savannah, Georgia from August 5 to 9, 2023. Bhawana was an awardee and one of the 16 candidates who presented in the Corteva Student Showcase this year.

Christina Jennings won the third place in the Ornamental Plant Breeding Oral Competition at the 2023 American Society for Horticultural Science (ASHS) Annual Conference, Orlando, Florida, July 31 - August 4, 2023.

Christina Jennings and Bhawana Ghimire represented the lab in the American Society for Horticultural Science (ASHS) Annual Conference, Orlando, Florida, July 31 - August 4, 2023. They both won travel awards to participate in the conference.

Congratulations to Sandhya Neupane, who successfully defended her Doctoral Dissertation. Sandhya’s dissertation was entitled, “Improving Nursery Crop Production Using Sustainable Approaches for Disease Management”. 

Dr. Fulya Baysal-Gurel received a $5k donation to help and find solutions for the current problem Vascular Streak Dieback of redbud in the Tennessee nursery industry.
